Sacha Mullin releases his new album "Social Touch," his first major release this year. Previously, several singles were released that are part of the album. The album has 10 tracks in total.
Sacha Mullin, recently awarded "Best Chicago Pop Artist" by the Chicago Reader, now shifts his art-rock compositions towards a more pop sound on his fourth album. Sacha Mullin is a singer, songwriter, and educator from Chicago, known for his "imposing yet vulnerable" vocal style, wide vocal range, and intense, ethereal, jazzy compositions. Although frequently compared by critics to David Sylvian and Jeff Buckley, his influences are rooted in artists such as Kate Bush, Joni Mitchell, and Geike Arnaert.
To begin, the first track, "Joy," has a unique sound with a growing build-up, with striking beats, a bass line that hints at art pop, a jazz vibe, and then a sudden transition. With a theatrical, velvety vocal performance, Sacha simply takes us on a vocal wave that makes the music grow, gain energy, and then a transition occurs that makes the track loose, with more agitated beats. It's a timeless song, somewhat psychedelic, cinematic, and opens the way for us to let the album take us on an immersion journey.
"Don't Wanna Hurt U" is the second song with an electrifying introduction, with a very well-crafted synthesizer, guitar sounds bringing soundscape landscapes, remaining constant. The vocal enters, in a more introspective tone and brings dreamlike verses in some lines, with a fascinating timbre, in a darker, more somber atmosphere within pop rock. A track that captures our feelings, conflicts, and that maxim in a relationship of not wanting to hurt someone.
"Hypocenter," the third song, evokes the nostalgia of the 80s with its synthesizer sound, taking us back to the excitement of a Friday night out on the city streets, flashing lights in our faces, searching for stories and meaning. The vocals are striking and captivating, painting these scenes with a carefree, relaxed, and light sound, with falsetto in some parts. When the chorus arrives, we're surprised by a contagious and electrifying rhythm, explosive, that makes us feel like we're on fire inside.
"Mime," the fifth song, has a more modern sound, different from the others, in a more upbeat, danceable electro-pop style. Its fast-paced verses draw influences from hip-hop in its beats and rhymes, captivating us. The vocals are full of attitude and personality, and the chorus is a real headbanger, with a mesmerizing melody and ethereal background.
"Social Touch" is the sixth song, with a psychedelic beginning. The music offers a soundscape that allows us to escape our reality, especially when listened to with headphones, in a unique sound and tapestry of vibrant colors that suddenly become a fresh and electrifying atmosphere. It's a pop environment, but not commercial; it's meticulously constructed, delicate pop that then builds, and the beats move our bodies. It's a cinematic sound, an escape from daily chaos where we float in our thoughts.
The seventh track, "Tears Into Platinum," takes us on an electrifying journey into the nostalgia of the 80s, with a style reminiscent of New Order. It's timeless pop, with captivating beats and synthesizers that bring a futuristic aspect. It's vibrant in the chorus; we let go and live that magical night that never ends. It's the return of the golden age of the 80s in a pop that has one foot in retro and the other in the future.
The eighth song, "Odd Radio Circle," takes us on a cosmic journey, and we travel to its beginning. Suddenly, piano keys appear, in a surprising transition with Sacha's powerful vocals transforming this sonic moment. The music is strong, full of expressiveness, and with sounds that leave us mesmerized. "Social Touch" also includes two bonus tracks that are well worth checking out; we won't give away any spoilers here.
The album stands out with songs that come alive, narratives that immerse us in our feelings, everything growing like a hurricane, with blends of pop and rock. It's an album built down to the smallest detail, creating connections, bringing vibrant atmospheres, and synthesizers that break away from conventional pop.
